You might have known Food and Drug Administration has approved Arena Pharmaceutical's anti-obesity pill Belviq, the first new prescription drug for long-term weight loss.
How It Works?: Belviq is designed to block appetite signals in the brain, making patients feel fuller with smaller amounts of food. Beliviq or generically known as lorcaserin is a pill made to be to taken twice-a-day. Belviq is said to suppress appetite and appears to affect metabolism by influencing levels of the brain chemical serotonin.
Who is for this Med?: The med will act for "chronic weight management in adult patients" with a body mass index greater than 30, or for those with a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol or Type 2 diabetes.
Test: Belviq offers would-be dieters modest benefits. One clinical trial found that two-thirds of patients on the drug lost 5% of their body weight, while one-third lost at least 10%, after one year of taking the drug as a supplement to diet and exercise. Subjects' average weight loss was 17 to 18 pounds.
Caution: The safety and effectiveness of Belviq when used alongside other diet medications has not been established. However, US federal regulator approves new pill, Belviq, with condition it will continue to look for possible side effects.
